Caroline Cockrill

Pottery

Like many artists, Caroline has created art since she was a child. At Massachusetts College of Art, she found clay and was hooked. The texture and unlimited possibilities of shapes and glazes and the firing alchemy intrigued her. One could make anything, of any shape or texture, dip it in earthy colors, and cook it until it hardened into a permanent sculpture, or something useful to eat on or drink from.

Caroline has been working with clay since 1968. Her studio is in Holliston, MA. In the past, she taught in the Holliston After School Program, and taught adults at her studio, and at the Danforth Museum School. She has exhibited at many local craft fairs and artisan shops.

Caroline loves to paint in oil and watercolor. The white porcelain she works with now is a perfect pure white surface to paint on with bright colored underglazes, followed by a clear protective and impervious glaze. So, she paints - sometimes even landscapes - on clay. The nature around us inspires her work, and she enjoys pressing in actual leaves and twigs or shells. Animal motifs are also a favorite. They sit and run on her dishes, especially dogs and cats. As a result, the customer gets a painting as well as a pot or dish.
